Where to Find Strength

Psalm 61:4 (NIV)
I long to dwell in your tent forever
and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.
One of the most insecure times in my life was when I was out of work for over a year. This was also a time that I became close to God. In a strange way it was the worst and the best experience of my life all at the same time.
How can that be? I can only explain it like this; when you are at the end of yourself and your resources and when you have nowhere to turn but to God that’s when He shows Himself to be worthy of our trust.
During that time I found myself constantly in prayer, I would pray in the car when I was driving, I would talk to God when I first awoke and often I found myself falling asleep at night still asking God for His help. I was praying constantly, admittedly this was an act of desperation.
I was daily in God’s Word searching the Scriptures looking for something to give me strength and sure enough God was there. One of the passages that God used in my life during that time was today’s passage. Sometimes in life the only thing we have is the shelter of God’s caring protection. When we are at our end is often when God shows up and reveals His character and strength. I remember thinking then that this must explain why so many conversion experiences happen in foxholes. Most of us have to come to the end of ourselves before we can come to realize this. After all, at the core of our salvation experience is the fact that we have no power to save ourselves.
If you’ve got situations that seem bigger than your resources then maybe you’ll find the strength that only God can provide.
