Social Beings

Genesis 1:27 (NIV)
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

The other day my wife and daughter came home with a puppy. Of course, everyone loves a puppy and we’re being reminded of this daily. We spent a good part of the afternoon in the front yard playing with the puppy. She would run from one person to the next playing and jumping and chasing her ball.

One of the things I noticed right away is that our puppy is very social. If one of us would turn and walk away from the dog she would look up with those sad puppy eyes for just a moment as if to say, “Don’t leave me,” and then immediately follow after.

When God created puppies He created them with a built in need for companionship. I guess that’s why we say a dog is man’s best friend. This really isn’t that different from most creatures and nowhere is it more obvious than with humans. We need each other. This is probably why social media has been so successful. We all enjoy the companionship of friends and family and we seek out friends when we haven’t seen them in a while.

If we are so social then it must follow that the one who created us is also social to have built that into our makeup. As a matter of fact the Bible says that not only is God a social being but He even desires a relationship with each one of us. We can know Him and have a relationship with Him. He is always available to speak with us.

Revelation 3:20 (NIV)
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
