Gifted to Serve

1 Peter 4:10 (NIV) Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

Little Ethan came running up to me at church recently. He was so excited that he could hardly get the words out of his mouth. At first I struggled to understand what he was trying to tell me. Then it all came out almost at once, “God gave me a gift today, I asked Jesus to be my Savior and He gave me a gift.” I was thrilled to hear the great news and asked, “You mean that He gave you the gift of eternal life?” He said, “Yes, that too but He gave me a gift so that I can serve Him.” I said, “Oh you mean He gave you a spiritual gift.” He quickly responded, “Yes, Mr. Scott, my Sunday school teacher told me that when I asked Jesus to be my Savior that he gave me a spiritual gift so that I can serve Him in the church.”

Others standing nearby heard the commotion and his excitement became contagious. How great that my little friend Ethan caught the excitement of the spiritual gift he received when he trusted Jesus as His Savior. How different is my response sometimes at the invitation to volunteer or to serve in some capacity at church.

The truth is that when we place our trust in Jesus Christ for salvation He gives us abilities, called spiritual gifts, so that we can serve Him. It’s our amazing privilege to serve Him and He equips us to do it.

Yes, salvation from sin is a wonderful gift we receive when we trust Jesus Christ for the payment for sin but He also gives us spiritual gifts so that we can serve Him. My friend Ethan made me thankful that God gives us gifts to serve Him.

Ephesians 4:7(NIV) But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.
